About us

SPEAR is a partnership of community anchor organisations in Bristol working together to address the health inequalities in our city.

As established community anchors we develop connections and build trust with local residents from different communities and backgrounds.

The organisations work to the place-based model of health and wellbeing, using social prescribing link workers based in GP surgeries situated in Bristol’s areas of highest need.

We use a holistic social prescribing approach, working alongside people to address the wider issues that are negatively impacting on them, and then together find the spark inside.

Underpinned by the approach known as Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), we support local residents to develop their own groups and activities, and to see themselves as someone with something to offer.

The current alliance of community anchor organisations in the different localities in Bristol are:

North Bristol – Southmead Development Trust

South Bristol – Knowle West Health Park

Inner-City – Wellspring Healthy Living Centre

Parts of Greater Fishponds – The Care Forum

The social prescribing link workers based in 22 GP surgeries provide services to the most deprived areas of Bristol and within England’s top 10% areas of multiple deprivation.
